IASLC 2024 Distinguished Service Award Nominations

The IASLC Executive Committee invites all IASLC Members to submit nominations for the 2024 Distinguished Service Awards! Each IASLC Member may nominate up to five qualified individuals, including themselves, for this honor. Keep reading for more information on the IASLC Distinguished Service Awards, the eligibility criteria, and how to submit your nomination(s). 

About the Awards

The IASLC Distinguished Service Awards recognize the "luminaries" in the field of lung and thoracic cancers--those who are further along in their careers and more high-level in their field of work--for their outstanding contributions to the field and to the IASLC. The IASLC Distinguished Service Award recipients are selected from qualifying representatives of the IASLC membership who represent specialty, geographic, and gender diversity.

Description

Paul A. Bunn, Jr. Scientific Award

The Paul A. Bunn, Jr. Scientific Award recognizes an IASLC scientist for a lifetime achievement of scientific contributions to thoracic cancer research.

Adi F. Gazdar IASLC Merit Award The Adi F. Gazdar IASLC Merit Award proudly recognizes and honors Dr. Gazdar’s lifelong dedication to lung cancer research through his pioneering work in molecular pathology. 
Mary J. Matthews Pathology/Translational Research Award The Mary J. Matthews Pathology/Translational Research Award recognizes an IASLC scientist for a lifetime achievement in pathology and translational research of thoracic malignancies.
Joseph W. Cullen Prevention/Early Detection Award The Joseph W. Cullen Prevention/Early Detection Award recognizes an IASLC scientist for a lifetime achievement in the prevention of thoracic malignancies.
Award Criteria

To be considered to receive an IASLC Distinguished Service Award, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have at least 15 years’ IASLC membership.
  • Must have previous IASLC service, such as, but not limited to:
    • IASLC committee service
    • member of the organizing committee or invited faculty (speaker or discussant) for any IASLC conference
    • reviewer or Editorial Board Member of JTO/JTO CRR
    • participation in IASLC's scientific surveys, such as molecular survey, COVID 19, etc. 
    • invited speaker for any IASLC webinar or podcast
  • Must be at least at the Professor level at an academic institution or at an equivalent rank in a non-academic institution.
  • Must not have previously received IASLC Distinguished Service Award.  
  • Must not currently be serving as an IASLC Board Member or Officer.
  • Must be able to commit to attending WCLC 2024 (September 7-10, 2024 in San Diego, California) in order to deliver Award Lecture, if selected. (In-person attendance is prefered, but not required.) 
Award Presentation Awardees will be presented at the annual World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC). Awardees receive complimentary WCLC registration, travel expense reimbursement, and one year of complimentary IASLC membership. 
How to Nominate a Colleague

To nominate a colleague for an IASLC Distinguished Service Award, follow these instructions:

  • CLICK HERE to access the Nominate a Colleague form. (opens in new tab)
  • When prompted to log in, use your IASLC Member Portal credentials.
    • If you do not know your credentials, click on the "Reset your Password" link to recover your user name and/or reset your password. If you are still unable to login, please email membership@iaslc.org
  • Complete the brief online form to Nominate a Colleague. 
  • The colleague that you nominated will receive an email inviting them to complete a separate form in order to accept the nomination and be considered for the Award. (See the next section for more details.) 

The deadline to Nominate a Colleague is Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 12:00pm (noon) Denver time (MST).

How to Accept a Colleague's Nomination or Nominate Yourself

  • When prompted to log in, use your IASLC Member Portal credentials.
    • If you do not know your credentials, click on the "Reset your Password" link to recover your user name and/or reset your password. If you are still unable to login, please email membership@iaslc.org
  • Complete the online form, including the following information:
    • Contact information
    • IASLC Membership and IASLC Service information
    • Demographic information
    • CV or biosketch
    • Professional photo (head shot)
    • Narrative biography (300 word limit)
    • One letter of recommendation - The system will request the letter on your behalf and it will be uploaded directly into your application.
      • If you are accepting a nomination from a colleague, please request your recommendation letter from that colleague. If you've been nominated by more than one colleague, pick just one!
  • Once you have started your form, you may save your work and return to the form to continue working or complete your form any time prior to the deadline.  

To be considered for an IASLC Distinguished Service Award, you must complete the full Nomination Form by Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 12:00pm (noon) Denver time (MST).
